"Homage to Women Artists"
LCSC Center for Arts & History, 415 Main, Lewiston
June 6 thru August 2008
Opening: Friday, June 6, 5 - 8:00 pm
The response to this show was amazing; 17 women contributed 19 boxes, shrines, homages to the women who inspired them. The women artists that the PWA members chose to enshrine ranged from the German-born Eva Hesse and Anni Albers, the British artist, Sue Coe, the Mexican icon Frida Kahlo, and famous American artists like Bev Doolittle, Geoorgia O'Keefe, Kiki Smith, Faith Ringgold, etc. We even had a box enshrining our own celebrity, Genevra Sloan. All the boxes represent an amazing amoung of work, reflection, and creativity, and I'm so impressed with the amount of talent we have right in our own PWA membership. This has certainly been an education for us all to learn about the enshrined artists as well as about each other: it's fascinating to see which artist each of us has chosen and why. Primarily, though, the result of this project has been that each of us has been able to identify and embrace those women artists who have paved the ground for our generation and for the generations to come; we have reinforced our awareness that women artists play a crucial role in our society, our communities, our world. Thank you all for your incredible work!
